invisible tears - a sung through musical theatre work

Act 2

Scene 8

(The Office in the morning)

No, Bob.

Lights up on Millie`s desk (stage right). Dimmer light on Boss through back screen.

Millie is sat on her desk. Chumley arrives, carrying his real briefcase.

Chumley:
Morning Miss Reid
Any phone calls today?

Millie:
No, did we frighten our custom away?
Sorry Sir, it was only a joke

Chumley:
Be careful I'm really a sensitive bloke

Millie:
Jem `phoned in sick

Chumley:
Don`t fool me, sick with love
Where is his pride?
He should give her the shove

Millie:
Keep his pride, yes you'll drink to that!

Chumley:
Did I survive, was I really so bad?

Millie:
You're spirit we captured
Your wife we admired
I hope that it had the effect you desired!

(Chumley retreats to his office, it is clear Millie`s comment on the speech cut too deep.
Millie sits for a while regretting making such sharp remarks)

(She uses the intercom to make an apology)

Millie:
Excuse me Ron

Chumley:
Far too busy Miss Reid

Millie:
About the way I spoke before

Chumley:
It's forgotten lets both be agreed
Though it's not what I employ you for!

(Lights on Chumley as he wrestles with the revelation that Millie has seen through him)

Chumley:
Derided for building my business
Chided by staff that don't understand
Don't I shine?
In control
I'm the head of this empire
Flawless in performance
Securing financial insurance
Forging a future for Chumley`s
Sure to survive but there's doubt in my mind
Do they know
Can they see?

(Chumley exits leaving his real suitcase on Jeremy's desk).

Lights down. Millie exits.
